Tips for a cheaper trip
Avoid the busiest weeks
December and January (Christmas, family reunions and school holidays) are the dearest. Flights around big events like the Heilala Festival in July and National Day in November fill up early too.
Book a few months ahead
Seats to Tonga are limited, so cheap fares go first. For Christmas, look 4 to 6 months out.
Set a price alert
On Google Flights, turn on “Track prices” for your route and it emails you when the fare drops.
Try one stop
Flying via Nadi (Fiji) or Auckland is sometimes cheaper than the fastest flight. Check the layover time, and whether your bags go all the way through.
Be flexible by a day or two
Use the date grid on the search site: leaving a day earlier or later can save a lot, especially for a family.
Check the baggage allowance
Fares differ in how many bags are included. Taking gifts, ngatu or a kiekie home? Compare the price with bags, not just the ticket.
Know the food rules
Australia and New Zealand are strict about food coming back in. Declare anything you bring, like kava, cooked food or seeds, or leave it behind.
Passports and visas
Make sure your passport has at least 6 months left. Non-Tongan passports should check the entry rules before booking.
Going on to the outer islands?
International flights land at Fuaʻamotu on Tongatapu. Domestic flights to Vavaʻu, Haʻapai and ʻEua are booked separately with Tonga’s local airline, and there are ferries too. Allow plenty of time between flights, and check bag limits on the small planes.
Prices and timetables come from the airlines and search sites and change all the time. Always check the airline’s own website before you pay. Found a great deal? Share it in the Community Chat.
