Pele

Pele means cards, and every Tongan family has its own way to play. Pull up a spot on the fala with Nana Lose, Uncle Sione and Cousin Ana. For now we play by “Last Card” rules: match the top card, catch the family out with 2s and Jacks, and be first to empty your hand.

How to play (Last Card rules)

  • Everyone gets 7 cards. One card is turned up to start the pile; the rest is the deck.
  • On your turn, play one card that matches the top card’s suit or number.
  • Can’t play (or don’t want to)? Draw one card. If it fits you can play it, otherwise your turn ends.
  • 8 is wild: play it on anything and choose the next suit.
  • 2 makes the next player pick up 2, unless they answer with their own 2 and pass on 4, and so on.
  • A Jack skips the next player.
  • Down to one card? Tap LAST CARD! before your turn ends, or you pick up 2 if someone catches you. Catch the family when they forget!
  • First to empty their hand wins the cards left in everyone else’s hands: number cards face value, J/Q/K 10, A 1, 2s 20, 8s 50.
  • A match is first to 200 points or 5 hands. Your points, plus 100 if you top the match, are your score.
